Fort Frederica
Built over twelve years beginning in 1736, Fort Frederica was the first permanent establishment of the European colonial powers on St Simons. Its construction helped Gen. Oglethorpe to hold off Spanish troops stationed at Saint Augustine in Florida. The remaining ruins have survived a fire, hurricanes, neglect, and wild boys (like me) roaming them and playing war. Thankfully, the site is protected as a national historic site.
